The Digital Media Design Group researches, prototypes, and designs user experiences for the public across the places they are and will be—websites, smartphones, tablets, connected cars, connected homes, wearables, and places we haven’t yet imagined. The Design Group contributes to projects at all stages of development—from inception through completion. Our group’s expertise spans user experience strategy and research, interaction design, product and visual design, and agile/lean UX methods.
As our Visual Product Design Intern, you’ll primarily be responsible for creating visual assets and designing interfaces for our product platforms—NPR.org, email newsletters & social networks, the NPR News app, and NPR One. You’ll also help with ongoing requests from other teams and divisions to create great visual assets. You should have a passion for visual design, be fluent in the language of user experience, be comfortable with various design tools (e.g., Sketch, Adobe Creative Cloud, design-in-code, etc.), and have a solid portfolio of visual/product design examples.
Defining the future of NPR email newsletters: Email is hot again. Help us reach listeners and readers via their inboxes by designing both templates and one-off visual assets across our portfolio of email newsletters. You may work with the Planet Money team one week and have a conversation with the TED Radio Hour crew the next—email touches all aspects of our news and programming operations.
Creating the next-generation version of the NPR News app: Work is underway to rebuild NPR’s flagship mobile app from the ground up. You will be able to join the app’s design team to help create new UI paradigms and test them with our member stations and users.
Supporting visual design needs for news and programming teams: On a regular basis, the Digital Media Design group gets asked to help our editorial and programming teams with their visual design needs. While we would love to help in every case, we don’t always have the resources to do so. That’s where you come in—though we don’t know exactly what projects will come up yet, past examples have included designing printable worksheets for the Morning Edition Book Club, Spotify playlist art for the NPR Music team, logo/identity designs for the NPR Editorial Training Unit, and much more.
Current students (graduate or undergraduate) and recent graduates of no more than 12 months prior to the internship start date are eligible to apply for this internship.
